Do you judge your partner more than you admire them? For healthier relationships focus on the positive attributes.

Sometimes just being there – even if you don’t know what to say – is all that matters to your loved one.

Encourage your aging parents to stay socially and physically active.

If you’re arguing with a loved one, stay focused on the current issue and refrain from bringing up past issues.

Many people believe they should work in a job that feeds their passion in order to be happy and satisfied at work.

Really?

With expectations like that aren’t you setting yourself up for a very unhappy and frustrating work life?

If we all worked in a profession we’re passionate about then who would pick-up your trash, deliver your packages, calculate your taxes …

And what if you have many passions .. do you pick just one?

And what if you have no passions … does that make you a “bad” person?

And what if you are working in a field you’re passionate about – let’s say healthcare – are you really always happy and satisfied — even when your hospital has a new leadership team?

Before letting others frame what your work should be, think about what YOU really want. Here’s a list of items to consider. Rank these 10 items based on YOUR priorities.

Control over my work

Flexibility with my hours

Sufficient pay

Co-workers who are tolerable

Manager who is tolerable

Treated fairly and without prejudice at work

Good benefits

Easy commute

Work that fulfills my passion

Job with potential growth

If your current job meets your top 3 priorities, then stop letting others define what you need in a job.

If you still have a burning desire to “do something you’re passionate about” then volunteer. During your non-work hours, find a nonprofit organization where you can fulfill that need (“to do something you’re passionate about”) while benefiting a good cause.

For a truly happy and satisfying work experience, keep your job expectations realistic. Unfortunately, even an ideal job has its challenges.
